Nevada Lawmakers Debate Guns on Campus
Nevada is only one of several states currently considering legislation that would make it okay for students and teachers to carry weapons on campus grounds. The trend has risen in the past several years after notable violent campus tragedies across the country.
Supporters of the law state it would make campuses safer. They contend that many campus tragedies could have been prevented or at least minimized if students, other than the aggressors, had weapons on them.
One supporter, profiled by Fox News, was herself a rape victim on the grounds of the University of Nevada at Reno back in 2007. She now has a concealed carry permit and states that if she had been allowed to carry it back then, she would have never been attacked. She testified in front of Nevada lawmakers in support of the bill.
Opponents of the measure argue the exact opposite, that it would make campuses less safe. They claim gun free zones on campuses are what keep campuses safe and the tragedies of recent years as rare as they are. Included in this group of opponents are many school officials and local law enforcements.
This article from a campus publication does a good job at showing the various arguments for and against, with students themselves arguing the point. A similar guns on campus law is about to be enacted in Arizona.
